SpotTheJoker — help

The app teaches you to recognise a scam call, text or message, and to agree a code word with your family so you can always check who is really on the line. This page answers the questions we are asked most.

A person reads every message, usually replying within two working days. It helps if you tell us which iPhone you have, which screen you were on, and what happened instead of what you expected.

One thing we cannot do

We cannot look into a call, a message or a payment for you, and we are not the police, your bank or a fraud investigator. If money has already gone, do not wait for our reply: open If the money is already gone in the app and work down the list — ringing your bank comes first.

The course

Ten short modules, about seven minutes each, with a test of six questions after every one. The tests use real-looking messages and call transcripts rather than definitions: you read one and answer nothing wrong or scam, and then you are told what gave it away.

Finishing a module's test opens the next module. Your best score is kept, and any test can be retaken as often as you like — retaking costs nothing and nothing is ever marked against you. The first module is about what a real call from a bank sounds like, and what a bank will never ask for.

All ten modules, all the tests, the code word and the emergency checklist work with no internet connection at all.

The family code word

A word only your family knows. If somebody rings claiming to be your son, your daughter or your grandchild — especially if they are upset and asking for money — you ask for the word. Someone who really is family will know it. Someone who is not will get angry, and that anger is your answer.

Where the word is kept

On your phone, and nowhere else. It is not sent to us, it is not part of anything the trainer asks the internet, and nobody at our end can read it. The same goes for the family members you list and the notes you write.

The app can write the message you send to your family when you agree the word, and it reminds you once every three months to rehearse it — ring one person who knows it and ask for it before anything else. Change the word whenever you like in the profile.

The practice trainer

The trainer writes a fresh practice message or call in whichever channel you pick — a phone call, a text, a messenger, an email — and then explains what gave it away. It is the one part of the app that uses the internet and a model, so it is also the one part that asks your permission first.

Every scenario is invented

Nothing the trainer shows you is a real message, and no real company, bank or service is being described. The scenarios and the explanations are written by a model, which means they can be wrong or incomplete. They are practice, not advice about a specific message in front of you — anything that matters, check yourself with the bank or the person involved, using a number you already have.

What the trainer is told

Only what it needs to invent a practice message: which channels you ticked, the difficulty you chose, whether you answered scam or nothing wrong, and any question you type about the scenario on screen.

Not sent, ever: your code word, your family list, your notes, your name, your photo, your course progress and your test answers. What you find hard to spot is nobody else's business.

If you decline the notice

Everything else keeps working exactly as before — the modules, the tests, the code word and the checklist are offline anyway. Only the trainer stays switched off, and you can change your mind the next time you open it.

When something does not work

"The connection dropped"
The trainer needs the internet; the rest of the app does not. Carry on with a module and try the trainer later.
The trainer says it is not set up
This copy of the app was built without the key the trainer needs. The course, the tests, the code word and the checklist are unaffected.
A module will not open
Modules open in order. Finish the test of the one before it.
The text is too small
The profile has a Text size setting, and the app also follows the text size set for the whole phone in iOS Settings.
Photos will not open for the avatar
Photo access is switched off for the app in iOS Settings. You can turn it on there, or simply pick one of the ready-made icons instead.
The app is in the wrong language
Choose one in the profile. The app speaks English, German, Spanish, Norwegian, Polish and Slovenian.

Your information

There is no account and no sign-in. Your course progress, your test results, the trainer's last scenario and chat, your code word, your family list, your notes, your name and your photo are all stored on the phone itself.

Reset all data in the profile erases every one of those, and deleting the app does the same. Nothing is synced anywhere, so a new phone starts from the beginning and we cannot restore anything for you.

The formal detail — what is collected for analytics, how long it is kept and what rights you have — is in the privacy policy. Requests about your data go to the address at the top of this page.

The app needs an iPhone running iOS 15.0 or later. There is nothing to buy: no subscription, no paid modules, no extra charge for the trainer.
